Removal of micropollutants and biological effects by conventional and intensified constructed wetlands treating municipal wastewater

چکیده

Seven treatment wetlands and a municipal wastewater plant (WWTP) were weekly monitored over the course of one year for removal conventional parameters, selected micropollutants (caffeine, ibuprofen, naproxen, benzotriazole, diclofenac, acesulfame, carbamazepine) biological effects. The wetland designs investigated include horizontal subsurface flow (HF) variety with intensification (aeration, two-stages, or reciprocating flow). Complementary to common approach analyzing individual chemicals, in vitro bioassays can detect toxicity mixture known unknown components given water sample. A panel five cell-based reporter gene was cover environmentally relevant endpoints (AhR: indicative activation aryl hydrocarbon receptor; PPARγ: binding peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma; ERα: estrogen alpha; GR: glucocorticoid oxidative stress response). While carbamazepine persistent intensified wetlands, mean monthly mass up 51% achieved HF wetland. two-stage system showed highest efficacy all effects (91% >99%). ranged from 56% 77% 60% 99% WWTP. Bioanalytical equivalent concentrations (BEQs) AhR, PPARγ, response often below recommended effect-based trigger (EBT) values surface water, indicating great benefit using nature-based solutions treatment. Intensified remove both more efficiently than (non-aerated) some cases,

Reciprocating constructed wetlands for treating industrial, municipal and agricultural wastewater.

Scientists at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), are continuing to develop and refine an innovative wastewater treatment system referred to as reciprocating subsurface-flow constructed wetlands. Reciprocation relates to patented improvements in the design and operation of paired subsurface-flow constructed wetlands, su...

Municipal wastewater treatment using constructed wetlands

The aim of the paper is to present alternative to conventional (i.e., the commonly used biological treatment plants) wastewater treatment systems, appropriate for small communities and settlements. These systems are the natural treatment systems. The emphasis here is given on constructed wetlands (CWs). First, advantages and disadvantages of these systems are presented compared to conventional ...

Vegetation effects on fecal bacteria, BOD, and suspended solid removal in constructed wetlands treating domestic wastewater

Constructed wetlands have emerged as a viable alternative for secondary treatment of domestic wastewater in areas with landscape limitations, poor soil conditions, and high water tables, which limit installation of full-scale adsorption fields. Existing information on the effects of macrophytes on treatment performance is contradictory and mostly derived from greenhouse mesocosm experiments. Th...

Removal Mechanisms in Constructed Wastewater Wetlands

The use of constructed wetlands is a relatively new technology but the system is gaining popularity due to its low tech system for treating wastewater (DeBusk, 1999b).Constructed wetlands have found to be effective in treating domestic wastewater where municipalities are concerned with reducing suspended solids, organic matter, phosphorus, nitrogen, and pathogens. Constructed wetlands mimic nat...
